Engineering firm Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe (MPSE) has agreed a deal to provide wind power in the UK, in a move which will potentially boost the number of green jobs available by several hundred.MPSE has committed to a £100 million investment in wind turbines and a research centre, with the first prototypes ready in three years' time and production possibly beginning less than a year later. The government has agreed to provide a £30 million grant for the project after discussions between the firm and business secretary Lord Mandelson and energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband.Lord Mandelson said: "The UK is now well placed to manufacture the turbines needed for the next generation of offshore wind farms. We will continue to work with Mitsubishi to secure production in the UK."Britain is the world leader in offshore wind power generation, with a 600 megawatt capacity and an industry employing around 5,000 people.Currently only one per cent of the world's wind power comes from projects at sea as the harsh conditions are damaging to the structures, according to the independent.
