Care jobs in focus as English society branded child unfriendly

Care jobs may come into focus as the children's commissioner has delivered a scathing attack on "child unfriendly" attitudes in England.

Sir Al Aynsley Green, who will leave his post at the end of this month, told the Independent that compared to other European countries, the feelings towards kids here were based on "a deep malaise".

He noted that while we may care about our own children, we seem to care not at all about the offspring of others.

Parenting writer Catherine Hanly has responded to his comments by saying that all too often, it is negative stories about children which hit the press rather than positive - and added that many parents would agree with Sir Al's summary.

"I think that part of this is to do with the fact that lots of people are disconnected from their family units in this country. You will find 30-year-olds who have never picked up a baby or a small child," she explained.
