Charity CEO: Higher taxation will cut smoking numbers

A charity CEO has spoken out to add weight to calls for higher taxation on cigarettes.

An Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) report says increasing tobacco taxation would reduce the number of smokers in the UK.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of Ash, said she felt smoking would not be allowed if it were a recent invention.

"There will be 190,000 fewer smokers in the first year [of the proposed tax increase] and half of those will be people who won't take up smoking and half will be people who quit," she said.

Ash's report suggests the NHS could save £20 million a year in treatment costs if a five per cent increase in tax is levied on tobacco products.

In addition, smoking-related absenteeism would be reduced, saving around £10 million per annum, while the extra taxation would raise £500 million in the first 12 months and £2.6 billion in the first five years.
