Those in housing jobs ''should use existing measures to protect tenants''-Housing jobs News 08 Feb 2010

Those in housing jobs should use existing measures to protect tenants

The announcement that tenants will be able to use a national register to check up on prospective landlords' records has been met with criticism by groups which insist that those in housing jobs should use existing legislation.

Alan Ward of the Residential Landlords Association (RLA) made his comments after housing minister John Healey launched a scheme to help private tenants deal with problems with their landlords through use of a hotline and the creation of National Landlords Register.

Mr Ward agreed that tenants should be allowed some measure of control over their rented properties but pointed out that the new system could be too open to misuse.

He noted that the RLA had announced a similar scheme to check the accreditations of landlords - but one that was vulnerable to "abuse".

"We call on [the Department of] Communities and Local Government to ensure that local authorities use existing measures - which amount to more than 60 pieces of legislation - to stamp out the worst landlords," he added.
